Metrolink is the largest light rail network in the UK. Continuously growing and evolving since first opening in 1992, the network consists of sections of fully segregated and converted heavy rail lines, as well as significant areas of on-street running, where trams share the road space with road traffic and pedestrians.
From the opening of the MediaCityUK spur in 2010 to the opening of the Trafford Park Line in early 2020, TfGM will have invested approximately £2 billion in the network; this is the largest recent investment in public transport infrastructure anywhere in the UK, outside London.
Metrolink consists of 105 km of twin track, 99 tram-stops, 120 trams, and two depots. There is also an extensive network of Park & Rides, as well as a number of bus and heavy rail interchanges. Together, these carry over 45 million passengers per year (2019 figure, pre-pandemic). Thanks to the Metrolink Capacity Improvement Programme (MCIP), there will be an increase of rolling stock to some 147 trams by the end of 2021.
